Hip Surgery Options

When hip pain is affecting your life and you’ve tried non-surgical approaches to ease the pain, it may be time to consider hip surgery. Stoughton Hospital offers a variety of hip surgery options based on your specific condition and lifestyle.

Birmingham Hip Resurfacing

Burt-Upper-Exum-Ridge-Tetons

Dr. Rogerson’s patient Burt continues to enjoy rock climbing after having BHR on both hips.

Hip resurfacing preserves the femoral head and the femoral neck. During the hip resurfacing procedure, only a few millimeters of bone around the femoral head is removed, shaping it to fit tightly inside the BHR implant. Your surgeon will prepare the acetabulum for the metal cup that will form the socket portion of the ball-and-socket joint. While the resurfacing component slides over the top of the femoral head like a tooth cap, the acetabular component is pressed into place much like a total hip replacement component would be. To learn more about Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, listen to Dr. Rogerson’s podcast.

Compared to traditional total hip replacements, Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) can have you home and on your feet in as little as one week. The implant is more stable and longer-lasting, and it can allow for more strenuous physical activity. Many of Dr. Rogerson’s patients have shared their stories, please click  here to learn more.

Hip Arthroscopy

hip_arthroscopyArthroscopic hip surgery offers a minimally invasive approach to correct a variety of hip conditions and relieve hip pain. It is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, so you do not have to stay overnight in the hospital.

There are a variety of hip conditions that can benefit from hip arthroscopy including:

  • labral tears
  • hip impingement
  • articular cartilage injuries
  • tendon or ligament injuries
  • hip instability
  • inflamed or damaged synovium

Additionally, hip arthroscopy is able to remove loose bodies in the joint.

Left untreated, all of these conditions may contribute to the development of hip arthritis.

Total Hip Replacement

When other treatments have not relieved hip pain, your surgeon may recommend a hip replacement. Hip replacement surgery removes the hip joint replacing it with an artificial hip joint.

Hip replacement surgery will relieve your hip pain and allow you to return to your life.

Knee Replacement

When other treatment options have not relieved your knee pain, your surgeon may recommend a knee replacement. A knee replacement involves removing the damaged part of the joint and replacing it with an artificial joint.

Stoughton Hospital also offers ConforMIS customized knee implants. ConforMIS is a knee replacement implant that is designed specifically for your knee, rather than a traditional, off-the shelf implant. This provides an individual fit designed to follow the shape and contour of your knee. To learn more about ConforMIS, listen to Dr. Rogerson’s podcast.

Shoulder & Knee Arthroscopy

If shoulder or knee pain is limiting your daily activity and other non-surgical treatment options have not provided pain relief, an arthroscopic procedure may be the answer.

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive approach to repairing shoulder and knee injuries. It is normally an outpatient procedure allowing you to return home the same day.

Ankle & Foot Arthroscopy

If ankle or foot pain is limiting your daily activity and other non-surgical treatment options have not provided pain relief, an arthroscopic procedure may be the answer.

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive approach to repairing shoulder and knee injuries. It is normally an outpatient procedure allowing you to return home the same day.

Patient Stories

Dr. Rogerson,
I just wanted to thank you and the whole “orthopedics team” for giving me the ability to return to my life, prior to having hip problems. It has only been two and a half weeks, but I am doing things now that were impossible seventeen days ago. I look forward to walks with my wife, playing with my grandchildren and participating in sports again, thanks to you. I can tell you truly enjoy your work and your staff shares your compassion and professionalism. I wish all doctors were as conscientious as you.     – Sincerely, Ed Walsh

My Stoughton Hospital Experience

From pre surgery to post surgery the Stoughton Hospital Staff went above and beyond all expectations. Dr. Richard Rilling, Tara Shaw PAC and the rest of the medical team during my four hour surgery were awesome!

For three years of my life I endured congenital hip pain from a slight pain at first to full hip lock and high levels of pain at the end of the third year. The stress from the pain was slowly consuming me and limiting me in my life and from activities with my children, it was time I had to get my hip taken care of. Through the great personal care and guidance from the Stoughton Hospital staff I had a safe and healthy recovery.

My name is David VanDerHaegen, I am a 52 year old father of three who now lives pain free.
