Seven years ago, Stoughton Hospital Rehab decided to help tackle Parkinson disease in their local community head on – and it’s working!
Collaborating with the Stoughton Area Senior Center and the Oregon Area Senior Center, weekly exercise classes are led by physical therapists Emily Devine, DPT and Rachel Peerenboom, DPT. Each class is 45 minutes, designed for people with Parkinson’s and their loved ones to participate. The classes focus on strength, posture, range of motion, balance and walking in a fun, fast-paced environment using research based exercises, with a goal of decreasing fall risk and optimizing quality of life
Wisconsin Parkinson Association has awarded grant funding to these classes at Stoughton Area and Oregon Area Senior Centers to support the growth of the exercise programs. The grant money will be used to purchase equipment for their biweekly exercise programs. It will allow for improved progression of exercises in addition to a broader variety of exercises that will keep members engaged in participating.
